Viking Technologies has announced that it has a new 50TB SSD, the Silo Solid State Drive. The drive comes in a 3.5” form factor with a SAS interface. While there are a few other companies with ultra high capacity, 3.5” SSDs, Viking is taking orders on the drive and shipping it now.
The Silo drive is part of Viking’s Ultra High-Capacity (UHC) family. This family is all about energy efficiency, with idle power under 10W and active power at 16W. This would result in much less power as the 50TB model could replace five 10TB drives. The company states that the drive is not only power efficient but also balances out performance, capacity, and cost. Ideal use cases would be cloud computing, big data, external storage systems, digital imaging and media, technical applications, and cold storage.
