At Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco, Oracle and VMware, Inc. announced that they were expanding their partnership in order to help customers enjoy the technology of both as they move to the cloud. This expanded partnership specifically supports customers’ hybrid cloud strategies by allowing them to run VMware Cloud Foundation on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Customers will now be able to migrate their VMware vSphere workloads to Oracle’s Generation 2 Cloud Infrastructure and customers running Oracle software in their VMware environments will now have technical support form Oracle.
The partnership allows both companies to reach across the aisle and take advantage of each other’s technology. For instance: Oracle becomes a partner in the VMware Cloud Provider Program and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution will be sold by Oracle and its partners. This Oracle Cloud solution is built on VMware Cloud Foundation and is said to deliver a full stack SDDC that includes VMware vSphere, NSX, and vSAN. Now customers should be able to seamlessly migrate workloads between on-premise environments and Oracle Cloud.
On the Oracle side, customers will now be able to use services like Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Exadata Cloud Service and Oracle Database Cloud, which run in the same cloud data centers, on the same networks, with a consistent portal and APIs. Customers that don’t have or are unable to provide their own data center can leverage Oracle’s ever-expanding global footprint. Through Oracle, customers will be provided with administrative access to the underlying physical servers, giving them the same level of control that they would have on-prem. Further, customers can leverage VMware vCenter to manage both their on-premise clusters and Oracle Cloud-based SDDCs through a single pane of glass.
