Today Western Digital announced that it is shipping the world’s first 10TB perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) HDD, the HGST Ultrastar He10. Though a 10TB drive was announced earlier this year it was an SMR drive. The He10 is drop in ready and currently has the highest capacity, lowest power consumption per TB, and highest reliability rating on the market.
This marks the third generation of sealed helium drives offered by HGST. This generation also marks an increase of 25% over the previous generation while using 56% fewer W/TB than air filled HDDs. The helium drives had some concern over adoption due to being an untested technology, however after shipping millions of drives over the last few years the drives have proven themselves.
