Icy Dock DUAL 2.5” to 3.5” SSD/Hard Drive Bracket Review (MB990SP-B)

Not all storage drives are 3.5” – as a matter of fact, most Solid State Drives (SSDs) are 2.5”. Icy Dock created its 2.5” to 3.5” hard drive bracket for those looking to fit one or two 2.5” drives into a 3.5” desktop hard drive bay. We take a look.

Product Overview
Icy Dock MB990SP-B EZ-Fit Dual 2.5” to 3.5” SATA & IDE SSD/HDD Bracket Specs:
  • Fits standard 2.5” SATA / IDE SSD and HDD (9.5mm)
  • Lightweight construction
  • For use in 3.5” internal drive bay
  • Compatible with screw-less type HDD tray
  • Genuine Plug & Play functionality
  • Tool-less design for hassle free device and hard drive installation
  • Ideally designed for anti-vibration and heat dissipation
  • EZ Fit pins removable for use mounting screw or proprietary tray use
The bracket is compatible with most 2.5″ drives, though it only supports 9.5mm drive height. While the outright majority of 2.5” drives on the market have a 9.5mm height this shouldn’t be a problem for most, it’s just worth noting that the ultra slim drives or thicker high-capacity drives won’t work.
In Use
The MB990SP is constructed entirely of plastic, which makes it lightweight. The plastic is well-formed; there are no sharp or unfinished edges. It was a simple tool-less install to put the bracket into one of my desktop’s 3.5” hard drive slots. Mounting holes are included on the side for cases that do not support tool-less drive install.
The rear of the MB990SP can be pressed or pinched together, which actually pulls back the mounting holes and enables a screw-less install into a rail mounting system.
Drives are easy to insert and remove; simply open the door at front and slide the drives in. Once the door is closed, the drives are held securely and there is no need to screw them down. The bracket also has two metal brackets which dampen vibration. I noticed no vibration coming from either of the 2.5” Western Digital Scorpio Black drives I installed when testing.
Warranty
Icy Dock includes a three year warranty with the bracket.
Conclusion
The Icy Dock MB990SP is an excellent solution for those looking to install 2.5” drives into a desktop, whether it be a hard drive or SSD. Overall the bracket is fast and easy to use – just as it’s designed. For $16 it’s tough to beat and nice to have around.
Pros:
  • Fits two 2.5” drives
  • Tool-less drive install
  • Tool-less install into 3.5” drive bay
  • Vibration-free
  • Inexpensive
Cons:
  • Does not support 12.5mm height drives
