Launched in 2021, the MS510TX series network switches by Netgear are looking to target the market for users seeking multi-gig network speeds and WiFi 6 capabilities in a small form factor. The PoE MS510TXUP sports some incredible capabilities that show just how serious Netgear is about becoming an integral player in this space. Its current average street price is $599.
For starters, the MS510TXUP provides six 10G uplink ports out of a total of ten available ports. Four of the six 10G ports are RJ45 copper ports while the last two are made available via SFP+ slots. All, except the two SFP+, ports provide up to 60 watts of PoE power via the Ultra60 POE++ standard. This is perfect for providing WiFi 6 access points power without needing to run additional wiring to each access point.
But the engineers did not stop there. The MS510TXUP has an impressive feature called “Uninterrupted PoE” which ensures that all connected devices utilizing PoE will continue to receive power while the switch reboots and even during a firmware update! A perfect solution to support PoE devices like security cameras that are negatively impacted by power resets.

The MS510TXUP can be accessed by several methods for management. While it supports the traditional web browser-based GUI over HTTP/HTTPS, SNMP, and RMON for management, Netgear also provides Smart Control Center and Insight Cloud Management as methods for device administration. (Smart Control Center (SCC) is a windows-based management utility created by Netgear which became End of Life in January 2021.)

Just like traditional device overview screens, we can see which ports are live and what their link speed has negotiated to. One fun little change is that the upper left link activity lights for each port will blink in real-time in relation to how much port activity is happening.

While Auto-VoIP and Auto-Voice VLAN capabilities, where voice traffic is automatically detected and isolated for quality of servers, are not new features to see on the market, Netgear includes two new autodetection features with the MS510TXUP. These two new traffic quality of service features are known as Auto-WiFi and Auto-Camera VLAN. The Auto-WiFi VLAN and Auto-Camera VLAN features automatically detect and prioritize the traffic based on user-configurable VLAN settings.
The insight dashboard gives a nice single pane view for remotely managing an individual, or multiple, Netgear device(s). Its main overview page lets us quickly see device utilization and any alerts that require attention.

Since Insight lets us view the details for multiple devices, we can view aggregate data across our entire network. We can then view the overall health and traffic patterns of data crossing over the network. Additionally, we can quickly check for any anomalies with a visual representation.

Anyone who has had to manage firmware updates across multiple devices knows how time-consuming it can be. Netgear Insight really shines here, allowing us to painlessly identify the firmware status of all our devices connected through the Insight dashboard and instantly push firmware updates to any out-of-date devices.

As a network switch targeted for the SMB space, the Netgear MS510TXUP is a solid piece of networking equipment that boasts a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of 848,553 hours (96.9 years). With its six 10G ethernet ports and very powerful PoE delivery, it is a good fit for small networks, or endpoint devices, which require high throughput and stability when it matters.
Paired with Insight, the unified remote management dashboard from Netgear, managing a large deployment of MS510TXUP’s is made a breeze. In the end, complexity can be a killer in these types of environments. The MS510TXUP has a very specific mission and executes it well.
