Amazon Launches Three AWS Outposts Servers

Amazon has launched three AWS Outposts servers, each of which is powered by the AWS Nitro System. Outposts is a line of fully managed solutions that offer AWS infrastructure and services to any on-premises or edge location. Their solutions also give customers the ability to extend and run native AWS services on-premises in a range of different form factors (from 1U all the way to 42U) and in multiple rack deployments.

Amazon indicates that users can create VPC subnets on each Outpost with the ability to launch Amazon Amazon EC2 instances from EBS-backed AMIs in the parent region. In the table below, you will see that the c6gd.16xlarge model supports six instance sizes, the c6id.16xlarge model supports all but the largest one and the c6id.32xlarge supports all of them:

Users can mix instance sizes within each Outposts server; however, it must remain within the overall available processing and storage capabilities. In addition, you can create Amazon ECS clusters (with Amazon EKS support coming soon), while on-premises code can make use of the entire library of AWS Cloud services.

Outposts servers connect to the cloud via either public Internet or a private AWS Direct Connect line and support a Local Network Interface that provides a Level 2 presence on local networks for AWS service endpoints.

They also leverage some of the more powerful AWS Nitro features, such as high-speed networking and enhanced security:

• The security model is locked-down and prevents administrative access, which helps protect against tampering and human error
• Data at rest is protected by a NIST-compliant physical security key
