AWS EC2 M7g and R7g Instances Powered by Graviton3 Processors Announced

Amazon’s new EC2 M7g and R7g instances, the second batch of instances powered by the AWS-designed Graviton3 processors, are now available. The new instances are designed to deliver up to 25 percent better performance than the equivalent sixth-generation (M6g and R6g) instances making them the best performers in EC2. AWS released its first Graviton3-based C7g instances for compute-intensive workloads last year.

Amazon’s new EC2 M7g and R7g instances, the second batch of instances powered by the AWS-designed Graviton3 processors, are now available. The new instances are designed to deliver up to 25 percent better performance than the equivalent sixth-generation (M6g and R6g) instances making them the best performers in EC2. AWS released its first Graviton3-based C7g instances for compute-intensive workloads last year.

The original general-purpose “one size fits all” instance has evolved into six families, each optimized for specific use cases, with more than 600 generally available instances. The new M7g instances are designed for general-purpose workloads such as application servers, microservices, gaming servers, mid-sized data stores, and caching fleets. The R7g instances fit memory-intensive workloads, including open-source databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics. The new instances feature DDR5 memory for up to 50 percent higher memory bandwidth.

Compared to Graviton2 and past instances, the M7g and R7g instances offer:

  • Up to 25 percent higher compute performance
  • Nearly 2x higher floating point performance
  • Up to 2x higher cryptographic performance
  • Up to 3x faster machine learning (ML) inference

The instances are built on the AWS Nitro System and include features that enhance security, such as always-on memory encryption, a dedicated cache for each vCPU, and pointer authentication support. Encrypted EBS volumes, which protect data at rest on the volume, data moving between the instance and the volume, snapshots created from the volume, and volumes created from those snapshots are also supported. The instances are EBS-optimized with dedicated networking between the instances and the EBS volumes and support Enhanced Networking.  Read How do I enable and configure enhanced networking on my EC2 instances? for more info. The 16xlarge and metal instances also support Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) for applications requiring a high inter-node communication level.

Pricing and Regions
M7g and R7g instances are available today in the US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Ireland) AWS Regions in On-Demand, Spot, Reserved Instance, and Savings Plan form.
