AWS announced the largest price reduction in AWS Cloud’s history. The price reduction is specifically for customers leveraging Infrequent Access (IA) with Lifecycle Management with Amazon Elastic File System (EFS). With the new price reduction customers can utilize the technology for as little as $0.08/month.
EFS is a popular fully managed, and cloud-native NFS file system for Linux-based workloads. It is already low cost, and its elastic nature makes it appealing for companies that need to grow, or may not need as much storage in the future. This is further bolstered AWS’ Lifecycle Management that analyzes usage patterns to maximize operational efficiency and thus reduce TCO. AWS’ Lifecycle Management finds that roughly 80% of the data is inactive or infrequently accessed. To this end, the company has EFS Infrequent Access (IA) with Lifecycle Management that tiers this cooler data to a storage the is better priced.
The price reduction announced is stated to save users up to 92% on their storage compared to standard EFS. EFS Lifecycle Management runs in the background, non-disruptively, to move the 80% of data that is accessed infrequently. The data is still accessible in the same file system namespace, just with a slightly higher latency. AWS has dropped its EFS IA storage class from $0.045/GB-month to $0.025/GB-month. Using the 20/80 access statistic mentioned earlier for EFS IA:
