AWS S3 Intelligent-Tiering Archive Access Tiers Announced

AWS has announced S3 Intelligent-Tiering Archive Access Tiers and several new storage features and updates as a part of the second-ever AWS Storage Day. The updates aim to lower customers’ costs and improve performance, management, and integration for several AWS storage services. These services include Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Amazon, Amazon FSx for Lustre and Windows File Server, Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Elastic File System (EFS), AWS Transfer Family, AWS DataSync, AWS Storage Gateway, AWS Backup, and the AWS Snow Family.

Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering (S3 Intelligent-Tiering) is a cloud storage class that delivers automatic cost savings by moving objects between four access tiers when access patterns change. The S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class is designed to optimize costs by automatically moving data to the most cost-effective access tier, without operational overhead. This storage class now supports automatic data archiving to new Archive Access and Deep Archive Access storage tiers. Customers can opt-in to one or both archive access tiers, and they can configure them at the bucket, prefix, or object tag level.

S3 Intelligent-Tiering: Available access tiers:

  • Frequent Access tier and Infrequent Access tier: One tier is optimized for frequent access, and another lower-cost tier optimized for infrequent access. These tiers give customers low latency and high throughput performance.
  • Archive Access tier (NEW): It has the same performance and pricing as S3 Glacier storage class.
  • Deep Archive Access tier (NEW): It has the same performance and pricing as S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class.

Other Key Features of S3 Intelligent-Tiering:

  • Automatically optimizes storage costs for data with changing access patterns.
  • Activate optional automatic archive capabilities for objects that become rarely accessed.
  • Designed for durability of 99.999999999% of objects across multiple Availability Zones.
  • Designed for 99.9% availability over a given year.
  • Backed with the Amazon S3 Service Level Agreement for availability

S3 Intelligent-Tiering Availability

S3 Intelligent-Tiering’s new archive access tiers are available now in all AWS Regions.

More Storage Features Announced in AWS Storage Day 2020

  • Amazon FSx for Lustre: Set, monitor, and enforce storage quotas on Amazon’s FSx for Lustre file systems using native Lustre commands.
  • Amazon FSx for Windows File Server: It can now be accessed using user-friendly DNS aliases, allowing customers to move applications and data to the cloud without making code or configuration changes.
  • Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS): The EBS Cold HDD (sc1) volume type gives low-cost magnetic storage for large, sequential, cold-data workloads: Hadoop Clusters, log processing, and big data. Effective from November 9, 2020, AWS reduces the price for sc1 storage by 40% in all regions where EBS is available.
  • Amazon Elastic File System (EFS): Allows creating an Amazon Elastic File System when customers use the EC2 Launch Instance Wizard to launch an instance. Then add the new file system to the instance, and it will be mounted automatically when the instance is launched.
  • AWS Transfer Family: It helps to meet compliance requirements when customers segment their AWS environment using tools such as AWS Landing Zone for security, cost monitoring, and scalability.
  • AWS DataSync: To perform fully-automated data transfers between datasets stored in Amazon S3, Amazon EFS, or Amazon FSx for Windows File Server, without deploying DataSync agents.
  • AWS Snow Family: Allows importing virtual machine images in raw (disk image) format as AMIs into Snowball Edge Storage Optimized and Snowball Edge Compute Optimized devices while they are onsite and deployed.
  • AWS Storage Gateway: Four new features were added: increasing scalability, security, and ease of use for File, Tape, and Volume Gateways.
  • AWS Backup: It can be used now to create scheduled, policy-driven backup plans for your Amazon FSx file systems.
