Processing data, and doing it faster, can unlock more value and potential revenue streams. Moving compute closer to storage accelerates data processing while making it more efficient. The Samsung SmartSSD CSD can show increases of data processing by as much as 10x for certain applications: database management, video processing, artificial intelligence layers, complex search, and virtualization. The new drive is touted as being a flexible, programmable storage platform that developers can use to create a variety of unique and scalable accelerators that solve a broad range of data center problems.

In order to get compute closer to storage while side-stepping CPU limits, the companies leveraged Xilinx’s FPGA accelerator. Data doesn’t have as far to move, thus can be processed faster was well as use less energy. This in turn frees up the servers’ CPU resources for other tasks and could lower the overall amount of servers needed, saving money in several ways.

The specifics of the drive consist of a U.2 form factor SSD. The drive holds up to 4TB but is said to hold up to 12TB when combined with accelerated transparent compression.

SmartSSD CSD Availability

The Samsung SmartSSD CSD can be ordered now and is expected to be generally available in January 2021.
