Azure has announced Azure Arc, which is designed to enable new hybrid scenarios for customers by bringing the company’s services and management to any infrastructure. Specifically, it brings Azure management capabilities to Linux and Windows servers and Kubernetes clusters on any infrastructure across on-premises, multi-cloud and edge.
Azure indicates that its customers will now have a consistent and unified approach when managing different environments via capabilities such as Azure Resource Manager, Azure Shell, Azure Portal, API, and Azure Policy. Developers can also choose their own tools when creating containerized apps, while IT will be able to ensure that the apps are deployed, configured, and managed uniformly via GitOps-based configuration management. In addition, Azure says it will be easier to implement cloud security across environments with centralized role-based access control and security policies.
Customers can also now deploy Azure SQL Database and Azure Database for PostgreSQL Hyperscale on any Kubernetes cluster–wherever and whenever they need it. Moreover, with the Azure Portal, customers will benefit from a unified and consistent view of all Azure data services running across on-premises and clouds where they can apply consistent policy, security and governance. Capacity won’t be an issue as well, because customers have limitless scale available to them by spinning up additional Kubernetes clusters in Azure Kubernetes Service.
Also announced is the expansion of their Azure Stack portfolio, featuring the addition of Azure Stack Edge, a managed AI-enabled edge appliance that brings compute, storage and intelligence to any edge. With it comes new features such as Virtual Machine support, a GPU based form factor, high availability with multiple nodes, and multi-access edge compute. Lastly, Azure announced a new Rugged series of Azure Stack form-factors, which is designed to offer cloud capabilities in harsh conditions the are inherent of environments such as tactical edge, humanitarian and emergency response efforts.
