Today, Backblaze added new APIS to their B2 Cloud Storage. The company describes the APIs as “S3 Compatible,” meaning applications written for S3 should now work on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage without any new code development. Backblaze was founded in 2007 and offers both a cloud object storage system and an online tool to backup to B2 Cloud Storage.

Customers have been asking Backblaze for years to provide an S3-like interface. For years Backblaze has been refusing to do so, citing performance and reliability concerns. As recently as two years ago, Backblaze posted an articlejustifying their unique cloud storage API. What Backblazes argument boils down to, is that their initial API design was intended to cut every expense possible. In this goal, they were enormously successful. Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage charges just $0.005 per GB per month and $0.01 per downloaded GB. Amazon S3’s standard tiers cost more than four times as much per stored GB. So, it is doubly surprising that, starting today, Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage not only provides an S3 application compatible API, but is not changing their fee structure at all.
Backblaze will continue to support their existing APIs. At this time, the company has said nothing about retiring or end-of-lifing their API. The newly released “S3 compatible” APIs are available alongside the existing ones. Customers may use either set of API they wish.
