Cisco Finishes Acquisition of Exablaze

At the end of the last year, Cisco announced its intention to acquire Exablaze. Now that the acquisition has gone through, the two companies are beginning to integrate. The bulk of this integration is centered around the Exablaze engineering team that will be integrated into the Cisco data center organization.

At the end of the last year, Cisco announced its intention to acquire Exablaze. Now that the acquisition has gone through, the two companies are beginning to integrate. The bulk of this integration is centered around the Exablaze engineering team that will be integrated into the Cisco data center organization.

A bit ahead of schedule, the acquisition was completed in February 2020, though we originally reported that it was expected to finish in the third quarter of this year. As we initially stated, by integrating Exablaze’s products and technology into Cisco’s own portfolio, they will gain the latest Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology with the necessary flexibility and programmability their customers need. Among these Exablaze products are advanced ultra-low latency FPGA-based switches and network interface cards, as well as Terminal Access Point aggregation packet brokers.

With the engineering team integrated into a single company, they will continue to focus on high performat, low latency networking, ideal for high-frequency trading environments along with new AI/ML cloud services, 5G telecommunications infrastructure, and defense applications. Now Exablaze customers will have access to Cisco’s global reach including sales, R&D, and customer support. For current customers that may be concerned, Cisco states that technical support for Exablaze will not only remain, but they should see an improvement in service. Cisco will also be pushing on with the roadmap Exablaze has already laid out such as the ExaNIC and FDK range of products.

The fact that Exablaze’s products already complimented Cisco’s own, will make the integration a bit smoother. Cisco has been on a buying spree over the last few years and it will be interesting to see where they go with all of the companies they acquire. However, this integration will help to address the increasing need for performance-optimized bandwidth with next generation switching platforms and network interface cards.
