Cohesity Announces Remote/Branch Office Appliance

Today, Cohesity announced a solution targeted at remote office or branch office (ROBO) locations. The solution combines Cohesity software with certified servers from Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Cohesity was founded in 2013. One of their co-founders worked at Google, so it is not surprising that they are partially funded by Google Ventures. The company is a well-established provider of both software and converged appliance data management solutions. Cohesity’s essential products include DataPlatform, DataProtect, Helios, App Ecosystem, and Hyperconverged Platforms.

The solution combines Cohesity software with certified servers from Cisco and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Cohesity was founded in 2013. The company is a well-established provider of both software and converged appliance data management solutions. Cohesity’s essential products include DataPlatform, DataProtect, Helios, App Ecosystem, and Hyperconverged Platforms.

Cohesity is expecting their new solution to provide customers with the same capabilities we are familiar with from their other products.

  • Backup and recovery that supports both modern and traditional data sources
  • Flexible, granular recovery, to any point in time
  • Replicate or archive data to the core or the public cloud
  • DataLock (WORM)
  • Data encryption
  • Multi-protocol support for files and objects (NFS, SMB, S3)

The new solution also offers some new features. Foremost of which is a significant reduction in the data footprint and WAN bandwidth utilization from remote sites with global variable-length sliding-window deduplication and compression.

Cohesity is targeting a spring 2020 release to general availability through their hardware providers, Cisco and HPE. The company is primarily hoping to sell to enterprises with numerous branch locations, such as national banks, retailers, chain restaurants, and rental car agencies. As such, it uses a single user interface both for onsite work and when accessed by remote IT teams. Once deployed, administrators can perform management operations centrally. For example, creating simple policies for backup and recovery across multiple branch locations, as well as branch replication policies that ensure a copy of the data is available from the data center or cloud in case of local failures.
