Cypress Unveils Its Semper NOR Flash For Automotive Applications

Today Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced its Semper NOR Flash memory family. This new flash family is stated as a combination of safety and reliability for automotive and industrial applications. The family meets the ISO 26262 functional safety standard, as well as being ASIL-B functional safety compliant for superior endurance and data retention at the extreme temperatures common in automotive and industrial applications.


Today Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced its Semper NOR Flash memory family. This new flash family is stated as a combination of safety and reliability for automotive and industrial applications. The family meets the ISO 26262 functional safety standard, as well as being ASIL-B functional safety compliant for superior endurance and data retention at the extreme temperatures common in automotive and industrial applications.

That company states that its EnduraFlex architecture simplifies system design by enabling a Semper Flash device to be divided into multiple partitions, independently optimized for high endurance or long retention. Automotive usage will result in frequent data writes. To this end, a partition can be configured to deliver up to 1.28 million program-erase cycles for 512Mb density parts and 2.56 million cycles for 1Gb parts. As compliance is becoming a bigger issue in automotive tech, a partition can also be configured to retain its data for 25 years. 

Dealing with automotive technology means dealing with extreme temperature differences. The Semper NOR Flash family includes AEC-Q100 automotive-qualified devices with an extended temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The devices also run in operating ranges of 1.8V and 3.0V with densities of 512Mb through 4Gb. For interface the devices are offered in a Quad Serial Peripheral Interface (Quad SPI), Octal SPI Interface, and HyperBus Interface.

Availability 

Cypress' 512Mb Semper Flash devices are currently sampling in 24-ball BGA, 16-pin SOIC and 8-contact WSON packages. The devices will go into volume production in the first quarter of 2019.
