Datrium Introduces CloudShift

Today Datrium introduced its new SaaS-based DR orchestration service for VMware, CloudShift. The new DR service combines Datrium’s single stack design with its SaaS platform to tackle real challenges that DR platforms are plagued with and can deliver predictable success. Datrium states that CloudShift will be simple to operate, with low recovery point objectives (RPO), low AWS cloud cost, and end-to-end readiness assurance. The company will demonstrate CloudShift at the VMworld conference in Las Vegas, Aug. 26-30, Booth #1350.

DR is a necessity; losing customer data, or one’s own, is unacceptable in this day and age. While there are several DR options out there of every stripe, cloud-based DR is one of the least embraced options. There are several reasons that cloud-based DR can raise concerns: bandwidth, latency, storage costs, restore points being too far apart, or just too much complexity from DR orchestration software requirements from several different vendors. Datrium’s CloudShift aims to address all of the above issues while lower costs and simplifying cloud-based DR.

As stated, CloudShift is a SaaS-based service, meaning the maintenance of software as well as the orchestration of DR can more or less be eliminated. To further simplify things, CloudShift uses one console for resources and runbooks and is VM-centric as opposed to leveraging LUNs. CloudShift is able to eliminate the issues that arise from multiple vendors by being tightly integrated with DVX.

Other issues that CloudShift tackles are price and RPO.  These two issues are normally at odds as low RPO is typically what companies are after but they have to pay a premium to have it. Organizations look to cloud-based DR for lower costs but RPOs generally come at lengthy intervals. CloudShift claims to deliver the best of both worlds with close RPOs that don’t impact performance and reduced cloud cost since the DVX stores all data copies with all the cost optimizations of a backup system. For costs, customers would only incur costs for globally deduplicated and compressed VM data in S3 using the Cloud DVX service.

Availability

Datrium CloudShift is expected to be available in the first half of 2019.
