Today Dell EMC announced that it was upgrading its popular and cost-effective midrange storage models, the SC models, with enterprise-class features that were previously only available on its higher end models. This newly refreshed series, the SCv3000 Series arrays, will bring advanced features to business of all sizes. This also marks the complete refresh of the entire SC portfolio, now offering better features, greater integration, and more shared capabilities with the larger SC Series products.

The SCv3000 comes with several changes, including a new hardware platform. The upgraded series comes with new 6-core Intel processors, 2X the memory and 3X greater bandwidth, according to the company this results in a 50% performance boost, with tested maximums up to 270,000 IOPS. However, the series has retained many of the key SC operating system features that made it popular in the first place.

New capabilities include:

  • Data Progression – enables true auto-tiering hybrid flash solutions with “0-100% flash” configuration flexibility
  • Intelligent Compression – for cost savings on both SSDs and HDDs
  • Full replication/federation with other SC Series arrays – investment protection with built-in roadmap to meet changing needs
  • Live Migrate – seamless data mobility and load balancing at no extra cost
  • Live Volume – volume-level auto-failover/auto-repair eliminates workload interruption during unexpected outages or disasters
  • PS Series (EqualLogic) integration – cross-platform replication and unified management allows PS/EqualLogic customers to easily add SC to their existing environments
  • Enterprise Chargeback, thin clones, remote replication and more

As with most things Dell EMC, the SCv3000 comes with plenty of options. From a deployment standpoint, customer are able to install the units themselves to save on costs. Through self-installation, customers can leverage a full range of ProSupport and ProDeploy services, including “Plus” versions – as well as the new Optimize advanced services option. Customers can choose between two base models (SCv3000 and SCv3020), and three new optional expansion enclosures (SCv300, SCv320 and SCv360). Through these options, a customer could potentially deploy as much as 1PB in raw storage per array. Multiple arrays can then be grouped in federated clusters with proactive load-balancing guidance and fast, wizard-based migration tools. The new series comes with support for VMware vSphere plugin, VMware Virtual Volumes, PowerPath, RecoverPoint, VPLEX, and ViPR.

Availability and Pricing

Dell EMC SCv3000 Series storage arrays are expected to be generally available in early October, with a starting street price of under $10,000.
