Today Dell Inc. released a major update to its DR Series of deduplication appliances. The updates include performance and scalability upgrades, the addition of encryption at rest, and VTL and NDMP backup support. The updates are for the DR6000DR4100, and the DR2000v and are all aimed at enhancing security, improving performance, and increasing flexibility.

The latest version of the DR series operating system, DR OS3.2, offers encryption at rest, VTL support, container creation wizard, support for MS Data Protection Manager, and NDMP support. There is also a hardware update to the DR6000: 6TB HDDs bumping up the capacity to 252TB and faster processors that Dell claims can yield 25TB/hour ingest speed.

Dell’s DR Series is the fastest growing purpose-built backup appliance provider in the industry. Dell has shipped thousands of units, equaling Petabytes of capacity. Dell states that they are adding hundreds of new customers per quarter and the DR Series is in use in over 100 countries around the world. Dell’s DR Series supports a majority of leading backup applications including: Symantec NetBackup, Symantec BackupExec, NetVault, vRanger, CommVault Simpana, EMC Networker, IBM TSM, Oracle RMAN, CA Arcserv, Veeam, Bridgehead, HP Data Protector, Atempo Time Navigator, and Microsoft DPM.

Key new features include:

  • Performance and scalability upgrades –By delivering Rapid NFS and Rapid CIFS – the industry’s first source-side deduplication capabilities for NFS and CIFS backup – on the DR4100, Dell has boosted its ingest performance up to 17TB per hour, a 150% performance increase.
  • Encryption at rest – Dell’s DR Series appliances now include encryption at rest capabilities to ensure data is encrypted both during the backup process and while stored on disk. For existing DR Series customers who download the latest software release, data already stored on their DR systems can also be encrypted, ensuring that all of their data is secured in a non-disruptive manner.
  • VTL support –DR Series customers can now leverage disk-based virtual tape libraries as their backup target, improving the speed of backups and reducing the risk, cost, and complexity issues commonly associated with legacy tape backup processes. Additionally, DR Series appliances now also support VTL backups using Microsoft Data Protection Manager.
  • NDMP support – The latest update also delivers network data management protocol (NDMP) support. The enhancement enables organizations currently backing up NAS systems to save time and lower costs by sending data directly from their storage device to a Dell DR Series target appliance, thus freeing up network resources by using the standard NDMP protocol.  This allows customers to move backups directly to the DR backup device and frees up network resources.

Availability

Dell DR Series OS 3.2 is available today to all customers, free of charge, through the latest software download. Dell’ DR Series appliances are available directly through Dell or through channel partners.
