Today Dell Security announced that it has released the latest firmware update to its SonicWALL operating system, SonicOS 6.2.6. This latest update comes with a couple of new features including the industry’s first multi-engine sandbox that enables customers to block suspicious files until a verdict is reached, SonicWALL Capture. The new update also comes with a feature that enables companies to enforce protection and productivity policies, Content Filtering Service 4.0 that controls access to inappropriate or unproductive web content.

As security evolves the authors of malicious code realize that something is different and change their methods to continue to be effective. These authors are getting increasingly better at detecting existing sandboxes and avoiding them to evade being detected themselves. Knowing this, Dell Security has developed SonicWALL Capture to utilize three technically different cloud-based threat analysis sandboxing engines. Dell claims that these engines make avoiding detection virtually impossible. SonicWALL Capture can also accept the broadest range of file sizes and types and can block suspicious files from entering the system until a verdict is reached.

Dell Security is also announcing SonicWALL Content Filtering Service 4.0. Dell states that the latest version comes with better performance and is easier to use for IT that need to enforce protection and productivity policies and block inappropriate, unproductive, and illegal web content from the network.

Key features include:

  • Block-page override, Bandwidth Management and Confirm actions ‒ In addition to the current allow and block methods, CFS 4.0 also offers block-page override (passphrase), bandwidth management, and confirm actions, giving administrators additional controls to individual domain categories. These five methods are configurable at the policy level (versus a global setting). This can enable educational institutions, for example, to personalize the teaching experience for specific schools, classrooms or groups of users behind a firewall, empowering teachers and IT administrators to facilitate a better and more productive learning experience.
  • YouTube Restricted mode ‒ Similar to parental controls, YouTube Restricted mode helps inhibit the search for, or access to, inappropriate videos based on YouTube’s proprietary technology.

Availability

SonicWALL SonicOS 6.2.6 is expected to be generally available August 1. SonicWALL Capture ATP Service is also expected to be available for SonicWALL SuperMassive 9000 series, NSA firewalls, and select TZ firewall models on August 1.
