Today that the Dell Technologies Summit in Austin, Texas, the company announced its Dell EMC PowerOne autonomous infrastructure. This all-in-one automation system is built for Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, PowerSwitch networking, PowerMax storage and options for PowerProtect data protection, automating thousands of tasks and delivering ready-to-run resources in a few clicks, shifting IT staff from routine to strategic objectives. The new solution will be available through Dell Technologies on Demand.

PowerOne runs a built-in, advanced automation engine. The general idea is to let IT focus on the core business while PowerOne takes care of the tedious odds and ends. The automation engines leverages Kubernetes microservices architecture and uses Ansible workflows to assist users by automating the component configuration and provisioning, delivering a customer-managed datacenter-as-a-service. PowerOne also provides a single system-level application programming interface (API). This API can be used with existing tools to deliver programmable IT operations. Dell goes on to state that through PowerOne, workload-ready VMware clusters can be created in a few simple clicks.

Benefits include:

  • Launch Assist speeds installation and configuration using built-in workflows based on VMware Validated Designs and Dell EMC best practices. PowerOne helps save time by automating the installation and configuration of hardware and VMware clusters.
  • Lifecycle Assist helps reduce infrastructure risk by simplifying daily operations and life cycle management with automated modular system updates and validation, continually checking the correct hardware and firmware settings.
  • Expansion Assist matches infrastructure with business needs by adding, removing or reassigning capacity and resources through automated provisioning and scaling features. Customers can more easily align operations with business requirements.

PowerOne is stated to deliver the services, security and resiliency required by mission critical and emerging AI and ML applications while providing easy integration into cloud management toolsets, such as VMware vRealize. Dell EMC PowerOne has joined Dell Technologies Cloud family as a validated design.

PowerOne components include:

  • PowerOne Controller: This onboard appliance is the automation engine. It uses a Kubernetes microservices architecture and Ansible workflows to automate the configuration, provisioning and lifecycle management of the components.
  • PowerEdge MX:  This modular server’s unique, no-mid-plane design enables PowerEdge MX to support multiple generations of technology releases, such as microprocessors, new storage types and new connectivity innovation, well into the future. PowerOne automates this kinetic infrastructure, assigning resources as required to deliver a truly dynamic compute experience that scales according to need.
  • PowerSwitch: Dell EMC switches power some of the largest web-scale environments in the world and offer users a choice of operating systems to best fit their requirements. PowerOne reduces complexity by abstracting and automating the switch hardware so that the virtual network is automatically provisioned for VMware workloads.
  • PowerMax: The world’s fastest storage array delivers performance without complexity through a combination of powerful architecture, simple operations, and trusted innovation. For added simplicity and to speed operations, PowerOne automates storage provisioning and zoning and dynamically expands new cluster groups when it detects new resources.
  • PowerProtect: To safeguard the data’s value, PowerOne also can benefit from the full PowerProtect data protection portfolio to address ever-changing growth and governance requirements. This offers cloud-enabled protection storage, integrated appliances and software-defined solutions.

Dell EMC PowerOne is available through Dell Technologies on Demand. This new finance service grants customers and channel partners more flexibility when it comes to purchasing products. Customers are able to set it up in a way where they only pay for what they need, when it is used. Dell Technologies on Demand offers several flexible pay-per-use options, along with global support, deployment, and managed services, all designed to simplify and reduce the management of on-premises IT.

Availability

Dell EMC PowerOne will be globally available November 22, 2019.
