Google Makes Several Announcements Around Its Cloud Platform

Google has made a series of announcements at its Google Cloud Platform event this year in San Francisco. Theses announcement run the gamut from the general availability of the App Engine for PHP, to a connector between Tableau and Google Cloud SQL customers, and finally HTC is working with Google Cloud Platform for an all-in-one solution for application development for their mobile apps.

Theses announcement run the gamut from the general availability of the App Engine for PHP, to a connector between Tableau and Google Cloud SQL customers, and finally HTC is working with Google Cloud Platform for an all-in-one solution for application development for their mobile apps.

Google has taken its App Engine for PHP out of beta and making it generally available. Google’s App Engine’s Service Level Agreement and Deprecation Policy will now extend to App Engine for PHP. According to Google, tens of thousands of developers have already used App Engine to build and deploy PHP applications and over 800 million PHP queries are handled each week.

Benefits include:

• App Engine's default security policies and ability to patch underlying infrastructure automatically — even on apps in production — help reduce apps’ susceptibility to vulnerabilities, like shell-injection attacks, file-inclusion attacks, or security bugs such as Heartbleed.
• App Engine offers built-in autoscaling so that apps can scale from zero to thousands of queries per second automatically. And if traffic subsides, App Engine scales down automatically so users only pay for what they use.
• App Engine provides managed services, such as a NoSQL datastore, memcache, user authentication API and more, so that one can build highly-available applications, faster.

Tableau Software announced that it has developed a Google Cloud SQL Connector. Tableau already has connectors to Google Analytics and Google BigQuery. With the new connector for Google Cloud SQL, users can have easy way to see and understand their data they use in Google Cloud SQL. This brings customers one step closer to both hosting and analyzing data in the cloud.

And finally, HTC announced that they are using Google Cloud Platform for developing mobile apps. HTC states they have been able to save 40% in IT costs and plan on developing more apps, faster in the future through Google Cloud Platform.

Availability

App Engine for PHP is generally available now and users can start with a free tier.

Tableau’s Google Cloud SQL Connector will be available in the next few months.
