HP Offers 1TB VSA Software Free With Intel Xeon E5 v3-Based Servers

Today HP announced that it is offering a 1TB HP StoreVirtual Storage Appliance (VSA) license for businesses that purchase an Intel Xeon processor E5 v3-based server. The servers that are included come from Dell, IBM, Lenovo, as well as HP's new ProLiant Generation 9 (Gen9) server models. The ProLiant Gen9 servers also now feature a single-click VSA deployment.

Virtualization continues to be the fasting growing trend in infrastructure, however adoption remains a challenge, especially for smaller sites with lower budgets and less space and storage expertise than larger enterprise-class sites. HP is helping customers simplify and cost optimize their virtualization by distributing licenses for more than 72PB of software-defined storage (SDS) capacity for free to any customer that purchases an Intel Xeon E5 v3-based server. Offering no-cost VSA software, HP and Intel are giving customers access to "hypervisor- agnostic, hardware-independent rich data services while preserving choice and lowering costs.” Intel Xeon E5 v3 processors deliver intelligent storage and meet compute and network needs across SDS centers.

Aside from allowing customers to easily adopt SDS by deploying resilient shared storage at a lower cost and a smaller footprint, the other benefits to HP StoreVirtual include:

  • Increased virtual desktop and online transaction processing performance – the Intel Xeon E5 v3-based technology easily supports virtual appliances and virtual storage, while HP StoreVirtual VSA software uses previously unused compute and storage capacity within a server, providing resilient shared storage for virtual servers running VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Linux Kernel Virtual Machine.
  • “Single click” SDS deployment – HP ProLiant Gen9 servers feature a single click wizard-based SDS deployment that automates VSA deployment as part of server setup, allowing for configuration in minutes. HP ProLiant Gen9 servers running VSA software offer a complete solution supporting virtualized applications and shared storage on the same hardware for lower costs to customers. HP Virtual Solution software also supports all x86-based servers and hypervisor attached external storage platforms. Business can transform capacity in hardware silos into hypervisor-agnostic shared storage capable of scaling out to dozens of nodes and 1.6PB of capacity. Customers using this solution can reduce the cost of deploying resilient shared storage by up to 80% and reduce physical footprint by as much as 50% versus deployment to dedicated storage.
  • Expand and protect SDS deployments – customers who combine the VSA solution with HP D3000 Disk enclosures can cost-effectively scale to over 500TB of additional, resilient shared storage capacity while leveraging the latest host interface technology and providing up to 50% greater throughput. HP offers a 60-day free trail of HP StoreOnce VSA software to protect this SDS infrastructure, reducing risk of data loss and lower data protection costs by backuping up data from multiple sites. HP StoreOnce VSA software gives users 10TB of hardware-independent, software-based backup, and deduplication support that supports VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors.

As of August if this year, HP had provided over 1 million instances of their VSA software, likely making them the largest SDS provider in the market.
