HPE ProLiant RL300 Servers with Ampere Cloud-Native Silicon Launched

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has announced a new line of cloud-native compute solutions powered by Ampere Altra and Ampere Altra Max cloud-native processors. With the new ARM-based HPE ProLiant RL300 server line, the company is targeting service providers and enterprises that are embracing cloud-native development.

HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen11

The new HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen11 server is the first in a series of servers delivering next-generation compute performance with higher power efficiency using Ampere processors. It’s an important distinction to note that this is a ProLiant server. This means the ARM CPUs are offered in HPE’s mainline offering, with a complete set of enterprise server features like iLO and higher-end build quality than is typically found in cloud-first server designs. These features include OCP slots for high-speed networking, three additional PCIe Gen4 slots for add-on cards and 10 Gen4 NVMe bays up front.

The HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen 11 servers provide a single socket that delivers up to 128 cores for scale-out compute, making them ideally suited for customers that offer digital services, media streaming, social platforms, e-commerce, financial, or online services, and cloud-based services such as IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.

With the announcement of the new servers, HPE is now extending its automated, secure, and versatile compute solutions to the rapidly growing service provider market and digital-first enterprises embracing cloud-native development with a high-quality on-prem server.

HPE ProLiant RL300 Technical Highlights

  • 1-socket, 1U platform featuring Ampere Altra and AltraMax processors
  • Includes all the same features of the HPE ProLiant server family
  • Will support a flexible range of processor SKUs that provide flexibility for customers across diverse workloads. Choose from options that allow you to maximize performance per socket or per core. Or select options that provide balanced ratios of performance, power efficiency, and price.
  • Up to 16 DIMMS for a maximum memory capacity of 4TB per system
  • HPE iLO with HPE’s built-in Silicon Root of Trust capabilities and provides flexibility to pursue an
    open-source strategy through OpenBMC
  • Up to three PCIe Gen4 expansion slots and two OCP 3.0 capable slots for I/O flexibility
  • Up to 10 SFF NVMe SSDs and dual M.2 NVMe boot SSD options

According to HPE’s Neil MacDonald, executive vice president and general manager, Compute:

“Service providers and digital-first enterprises are at the forefront of the next major compute infrastructure build-out. These organizations understand that agility, flexibility, and innovation start with compute. They also realize that traditional ODM boxes simply won’t cut it in a market that demands depth of IP, performance, reliability, security, and control. This is where HPE steps in and why we chose Ampere.”

Ampere’s Founder and CEO, Renee J. James, added:

“Ampere is excited to be the first cloud-native and newest member of the HPE ProLiant family. The cloud is the growth engine of our industry but demands a modern processor that is both high performance and very power efficient to meet the global ESG demands. HPE is taking a leadership position in delivering cloud-native Ampere Altra, and Altra Max based ProLiant systems to Enterprise customers and Service Providers deploying cloud technologies.”

CloudSigma becomes an early adopter of the HPE ProLiant RL servers

CloudSigma, a pure-cloud IaaS and PaaS provider with advanced hybrid hosting solutions enabling the digital industrial economy, offers highly-available, flexible, enterprise-class cloud servers and cloud hosting solutions in Europe, The US, APAC, and the Middle East in over 20 locations. CloudSigma is one of the most customizable cloud providers on the market, giving customers full control over their cloud and eliminating restrictions on how users deploy their computing resources.

As a provider of customized clouds, CloudSigma required an agile and open platform that delivered predictable cost and high performance and selected the HPE ProLiant RL300 server.

According to CloudSigma’s CEO, Robert Jenkin:

“Based on our benchmarking, the HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen11 server with Ampere processors is delivering a significantly higher power efficiency. This is allowing us to both meet our improved sustainability goals and provide a lower cost of delivery to our end customers.”

Availability

The HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen11 server will be available worldwide for purchase or as-a-service through HPE GreenLake in calendar year Q3 2022, through HPE and HPE’s Channel partners.
