HPE Shares HCI Enhancement Plans

Today, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced some of their planned enhancements for their HCI lineup. Second generation AMD EPYC CPUs are expected to be available as a shipping option for HPE’s SimpliVity 325 Gen10 1U servers later this month. In addition, HPE Nimble Storage dHCI, a disaggregated HCI platform released last year, is now available through HPE Greenlake. However, the full set of planned features for dHCI through Greenlake won’t be available until later this year.

Second generation AMD EPYC CPUs are expected to be available as a shipping option for HPE’s SimpliVity 325 Gen10 1U servers later this month. In addition, HPE Nimble Storage dHCI, a disaggregated HCI platform released last year, is now available through HPE Greenlake. However, the full set of planned features for dHCI through Greenlake won’t be available until later this year.

HPE’s SimpliVity line was one of the first HCI offerings, coming out in 2009. Since then, the line has stayed true to its original goal of trying to provide cheap and easy to use HCI appliances. We did a deep dive on the line two years ago. Since then, HPE has made some incremental improvements and added new features, while retaining their focus ease-of-use. HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen10 is the smallest in the lineup with a 1U form factor. It is aimed at branch office and edge deployments. The 325 Gen10 has two storage options, providing either 4.6TB or 7.5TB of usable memory per unit.

HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is a disaggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure appliance. It separates storage from the processing elements, but the only processing elements it works with are HPEs ProLiant line. Previously, it only worked with the Intel ProLiant models, but HPE just added support for the second-generation AMD EPYC ProLiant models as well. Customers can subscribe to them through Greenlake immediately; however, the full set of Greenlake services will not be immediately available. Notably, single-click software upgrades will not be supported until later this year. Currently, HPE is vaguely targeting mid-2020 for full support.

• HPE Nimble Storage dHCI is immediately available through HPE Greenlake.
• HPE Nimble Storage dHCI single-click software upgrade enhancements are projected for sometime mid-2020.
