In the Lab: 3-Node VMware vSAN Cluster Setup and Configuration Video

As we continue to expand our scope of coverage, spending more time with VMware and the associated products is an important area of emphasis for the StorageReview lab. To support this initiative, we’ve set up a dedicated 3-node cluster that’s ideally suited for this task. We’ve grouped three Dell EMC PowerEdge R730 servers that were previously decommissioned into an isolated sandbox.

Each server is very well appointed, with twin Intel E5-2699 v4 CPUs, 256GB of RAM and dual port Mellanox ConnectX-4 25GbE NICs. Looking at storage, each node has 3x Kioxia (Toshiba) PX04S 960GB read intensive SAS SSDs and one PX04S 400GB write intensive SSD. Additionally, the cluster has access to a 1TB thin provisioned volume from our all-flash NetApp A200.

In this video we highlight the core hardware components of our 3-node vSAN sandbox, and show the process of setting up the vSAN datastore. From there we enable deduplication and compression for vSAN. Lastly we take a look at the iSCSI datastore and vSAN capacity view to ensure all is well.
