Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 Series Announced

Intel has announced the Optane Persistent Memory 200 Series, the company’s 2nd-gen high-performing, persistent memory tier for 3rd-gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors on 4-socket platforms. The new line of PMem is quoted to deliver an average of 25% more in memory bandwidth compared to the last generation, 12-15 watts of thermal design power (TDP), and is available in capacities up to 512GB.

Platforms that are optimized for 3rd generation processors can support one Intel Optane PMem 200 series module per channel (and up to six on a single socket), meaning it offers up to 3TB of PMem per socket and total memory capacity (with DRAM) of 4.5 TB per socket. It also features data persistence for memory, where data remains in PMem after both planned and accidental restarts. This helps to eliminate unnecessary data reloads for less down time and fewer losses from system outages.

Intel indicates the following ways Intel Optane PMem 200 series will improve key data center metrics:

  • Increased CPU utilization and utility of each server
  • Increased application throughput with more memory capacity
  • Increased VM density or support more services and users
  • Support for larger in-memory databases without prohibitive price tags
  • Improve business resilience for systems with critical data
  • Consolidate server footprint, reduce software licensing costs, and maximize return on enterprise investment

The Intel Optane PMem 200 series also leverages Application-transparent AES-256 encryption for data at rest, which secures data in persistent memory with no software code changes and minimal impact on performance.

Intel adds that the Optane PMem 200 series will help users to attain more data to be extracted from larger data sets, bringing a lot of utility to each server. In addition, in-memory databases can access more data at “DRAM-like speeds” and workloads processing massive data sets, continuously without repeatedly loading and storing data locally.
