Today at CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, LaCie (the premium brand from Seagate Technology) announced updates to both its Rugged and d2 Thunderbolt storage devices. The Rugged series has been updated with a maximum of 5TB in capacity and the d2 now carries an upward of 10TB of capacity. Both of the devices will now sport a USB-C port for USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.

LaCie has been making high quality and beautifully designed storage solutions for some time now. Their devices are popular with photographers, videographers, and musicians. However, as technology changes and improves to deliver higher quality, more capacity is required as a result. Not only are users looking for the capacity to match the quality they are producing, but also they need faster transfer speeds for the larger amount of data that is residing on these devices.

The LaCie Rugged line is designed for in the field use with its ability to resist dust and water as well as take a beating. The updated Rugged line sees an HDD version with capacity as high as 5TB (Seagate Barracuda drive under the hood). The SSD version now comes in capacities up to 2TB. The 1TB SSD version can hit speeds as high as 510MB/s (30% higher than the previous version), and according to LaCie, with these speeds users would be able to transfer 100GB of data in roughly 3 minutes. Both the HDD and SSD version now feature a USB-C connection giving them a wide range of computers to connect to (as they work with the new C type and Thunderbolt 3 connection as well as being backward compatible to USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2 connections).

LaCie Rugged key specifications:

  • Capacity:
    • HDD: 4TB, 5TB
    • SSD: 500GB, 1TB, 2TB
  • Interface: USB-C
  • Bus powered
  • Water, dust, shock resistant
  • Performance (Up to)
    • HDD: 130MB/s
    • SSD: 510MB/s

LaCie has updated the d2 Thunderbolt now with an USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 interface and up to 10TB of capacity (Seagate Barracuda Pro). The new d2 is a great addition to laptops that don’t come with high capacities, though it can add high capacity to any computer connected to it.  This high capacity lends itself well to large video or photo projects. LaCie states transfer speeds as high as 240MB/s. Users can use the Thunderbolt ports to daisy chain up to six d2 drives together or use the USB-C port to charge modern laptop such as the new MacBook Pro.  The new d2 comes with a 5-year warranty.

LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3 key specifications:

  • Capacity: 6TB, 8TB, 10TB
  • Ports:
    • 2 x Thunderbolt 3
    • 1 x USB-C
  • Performance (Up to): 240MB/s
  • Warranty: 5-year

Availability and pricing

LaCie expects the new devices to be available this quarter. The new Rugged SSD will start at $249.99 for the 1TB model. The new d2 will start at $429.99 for the 6TB model.
