Marvell Expands Its NVMe-oF Ethernet SSD Technology

Today at FMS 2019, Marvell announced that it is expanding its NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) portfolio. The company is announcing that its NVMe-oF SSD converter controller is powering Toshiba’s new native NVMe-oF Ethernet SSD. Marvell is also announcing a new NVMe-oF Ethernet SSD controller that it says can speed time to market for SSD makers while driving adoption of Ethernet Bunch of Flash (EBOF) architectures.

The need for increasing capacity is growing. While there are new technologies they are not nearly as fast as the rate of data growth. Not only do organizations need more storage, they need to be able to access this storage faster as gaining insights form data stored could potentially transform their business. Technologies like NVMe and NVMe-oF give users new ways of storing and accessing data, however, data centers have to migrate away from legacy protocols. Marvell argues that a simple, low power and compute-less Ethernet fabric, in lieu of a PCIe approach, will allow data centers to optimize their infrastructure and make hardware investments far more cost-effectively in the face of increasing storage requirements.

Last year at FMS, Marvell unveiled its NVMe-oF technology. Since its announcement, Marvell states several vendors and OEMs have embraced and began implementing the new technology. One such vendor is Toshiba Memory that is releasing its new 2.5” in-form factor Ethernet SSD is the first market-ready product to integrate Marvell’s NVMe-oF SSD converter controller technology. Marvell goes on to state that the new Toshiba drive can be used in conjunction with its Ethernet switch products, enabling optimal storage disaggregation, eliminating costly CPU and DRAM components and increasing overall data center storage performance.

Marvell also unveiled its new NVMe-oF Ethernet controller, what it claims to be an industry first. This new controller will help lower TCO of enterprise and data center SSDs. The new controller, the 88SS5000, is also able to fully integrate in with the company’s data center Ethernet switches including the Prestera family of packet processors.

Marvell will showcase its leading-edge NVMe-oF Ethernet SSD controller at the Flash Memory Summit, August 6-8 at the Santa Clara Convention Center (Expo Booth #511, Exhibit Hall A).
