NetApp FAS500f Announced

Today NetApp made several announcements around hardware, software, and cloud. One of the hardware announcements was the new NetApp FAS500f. The FAS500f is the company’s first all flash capacity array, and leverages QLC SSDs.

Today NetApp made several announcements around hardware, software, and cloud. One of the hardware announcements was the new NetApp FAS500f. The FAS500f is the company’s first all flash capacity array, and leverages QLC SSDs.

NetApp is known for, and in our review has proven, that they can really deliver performance for storage. Top of the line storage performance is not always needed, nor the costs that come with it. For tier 2 workloads, NetApp has come out with the FAS500f. This array is aimed at use cases such as backup consolidation, test/dev/sandbox copies for databases, VM test/dev/sandbox, and fast recovery. Basically, this guy is for workloads that normally would use 10K SAS but need lower latency, not super low, more in the 2ms-4ms range.

The NetApp FAS500f is a 2U array that has integrated support for capacity flash NVMe SSDs. Like the A250 announced today, the FAS500f also has end-to-end NVMe support. The array comes in three configurations 24 internal SSDs (supporting up to 15.3TB per drive), 24 internal SSDs plus 12 SSDs in a NS224 shelf, and 24 internal and 24 external in an NS224 shelf. The array has tow 25GbE ports, two 10Gbase-T onboard ports, and two mezzanine card slots add 10GbE, 25GbE for host connectivity, 8/16/32Gb FC, and 100GbE RoCE for the external NVMe shelf mentioned above. The FAS500f runs ONTAP 9.8.
