This software also includes StorageGRID load balancer, what the company calls a critical component to operating object storage.
On-prem object storage was largely thought of as something large enterprises engage in. It takes specific resources and staff to run object and smaller environments of yesteryear just didn’t have the resources, but in several cases the desire was there. NetApp has seen several customers of various sizes need to spin up object environments for several reasons. Seeing a need, NetApp is providing the gear.
Last year, NetApp released a much larger appliance in the StorageGRID SG1000. The SG100 brings the same enterprise-ready management tools to a smaller size for a smaller market, and at a better cost. The main software components of both appliances are the admin node and the gateway node. The company sates that the software is able to maximize performance while simplifying management of object environments. The gateway node is where the load balancing takes place (though it can be an optional function of the admin node). The StorageGRID load balancer is purpose built to create a highly available object storage endpoint. Load balancing works by simplifying the resource pooling of storage nodes and manage the distribution of data across those nodes through the S3 API to an endpoint address.
StorageGRID SG100 is purpose built and has removed the complexity of general-purpose load balancers. StorageGRID handles creating resource pools, health checks, SSL configuration, even upgrades and patching and can create custom features for the SG100. StorageGRID 11.4 has an advanced QoS feature called Traffic Classifications. This feature provides object storage optimized QoS such as bandwidth and rate limits along with the ability to gain deep insights into granular object storage workloads.
