New Foundation To Support Continuous Delivery Collaboration

Today the open source Linux Foundation, announced a new, neutral, foundation for the development and support of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) software. The Continuous Delivery Foundation will serve as the vendor-neutral home for CI/CD products including Jenkins, Spinnaker, and Tekton. The Linux Foundation has many similar non-profit foundations like this one, so there is every reason to expect big things from the new foundation.

The Continuous Delivery Foundation will have an open governance model that encourages participation and technical contribution and will provide a framework for long-term stewardship and sustainability for CI/CD tools part of the foundation. The foundation is launching with 18 founding members including Alauda, Alibaba, Anchore, Armory, Autodesk, Capital One, CircleCI, CloudBees, DeployHub, GitLab, Google, Huawei, JFrog, Netflix, Puppet, Red Hat, SAP, and Snyk.

A large part of the impetus for theContinuous Delivery Foundation grew out of a series of presentations by R. Tyler Croy at the Jenkins World Contributor Summit in 2017 focusing on increasing clarity of pull request history and attracting corporate contributors. Given this history, it is unsurprising that the popular and widely used continuous integration service Jenkins will be a big part of the foundation. Jenkins X, which is basically Jenkins on Kubernetes will also be one of the founding projects. In addition to these services, which almost every developer is familiar with, some other open source projects will also be finding a new home in the Continuous Delivery Foundation. Spinnaker, supported by both Netflix and Google, will extend the Continuous Delivery Foundation’s umbrella to include a multi-cloud continuous delivery service. Tekton is the fourth and final of founding service and provides k8s-style resources for declaring CI/CD-style pipelines. The Continuous Delivery Foundation is optimistic about bringing in other open source tools but hasn't named any of the services they hope to bring under their umbrella yet.
