Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Adds Dynamic Performance Scaling with Autotuning for OCI Block Storage

Oracle has announced Dynamic Performance Scaling with Autotuning for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Attached Block Storage. This advancement in OCI allows for seamless adjustment of the performance of any of your multipath storage volumes, regardless of when they were created. This has the potential to be a very effective means for businesses to achieve more processing of their business data, and also improve the costs associated with the business workloads.

Oracle claims that, while competitors may provide temporary storage performance bursts, this often isn’t predictable and steady enough for many business needs. Another advantage to the dynamic performance scaling with autotuning for OCI is that this boost isn’t limited to specific storage tiers within the infrastructure, but rather the OCI solution is comprehensive across all storage tiers, and even provides a performance service level agreement (SLA).

With this new feature, businesses can spend fewer resources manually monitoring and managing performance of their volumes – a practice that often lags behind the more immediate needs of the business as the workload changes.

Also, since this functionality is more dynamic and automatically tunes based on ever-changing demands, businesses no longer need to commit to higher cost investments for high performance on storage volumes in order to achieve needed performance during peak times – a practice that can waste business resource investment during non-peak workload periods.

Put another way, rather than investing in a high-performance cost 100% of the time, even during non-peak periods, this new functionality allows configuring a range of performance scaling so that non-peak times on a volume are only charged for the lower performance rates.

If a business has multiple volumes with high-performance needs at different peak periods, this savings can be substantial as it is no longer necessary to pay the high-performance rates for all of volumes during non-peak periods.

As Oracle shows below, configuring the dynamic performance scaling is a relatively simple operation:

Having spent much of my early career managing various infrastructures for best performance to provide good business value, Dynamic Performance Scaling with Autotuning is an exciting advancement that has the potential to bring a whole new level of business optimization. The monitoring tools allow for checking the performance and throughput of the OCI storage volumes as well, which is great for validating the configuration choices made.

The Oracle documentation for Dynamic Performance Scaling can be found here in their online documentation.
