Oracle Makes Several Announcements At its CloudWorld New York

Today in NYC, Oracle made several announcements around its cloud offerings. These include a demonstration of the company’s Autonomous cloud focused on autonomous operations. Oracle announced what it is referring to as the industry’s strongest and most comprehensive cloud guarantee. And the company announced aggressive global expansion of its Oracle Cloud.

Today in NYC, Oracle made several announcements around its cloud offerings. These include a demonstration of the company’s Autonomous cloud focused on autonomous operations. Oracle announced what it is referring to as the industry’s strongest and most comprehensive cloud guarantee. And the company announced aggressive global expansion of its Oracle Cloud.

When the general public thinks of automation and AI they think of self driving Tesla cars or killer robots (or perhaps only job killing robots). For IT, autonomous services mean something quite different such as creating higher availability and removing monotonous and tedious tasks from admins. Oracle already has autonomous services, including the Oracle Autonomous Database, and is now expanding even further to make all of Oracle Cloud Platform services self-driving, self-securing and self-repairing. Benefits include:

• Self-Driving to Lower Costs and Increase Productivity: Eliminate human labor to provision, secure, monitor, backup, recover and troubleshoot. Automatically upgrade and patch itself while running. Instantly grow and shrink compute or storage without downtime.
• Self-Securing to Lower Risk: Protect from external attacks and malicious internal users. Automatically apply security updates while running to protect against cyberattacks, and automatically encrypt all data.
• Self-Repairing for Higher Availability: Provide automated protection from all planned and unplanned downtime with up to 99.995 percent availability, resulting in less than 2.5 minutes of downtime per month including planned maintenance.

As more enterprise customers move to the cloud, they require consistent performance and reliability. Oracle announced today that it was expanding its enterprise SLAa to deliver performance, manageability, and availability. These SLAs will be extended to all of the company’s autonomous services as well. The new SLA guarantees that Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will deliver more than 90 percent of published performance every day in a given month.  If it falls below that level for even as few as 44 minutes a month, customers may claim service credits according to Oracle’s terms of service.

Seeing strong customer demand, Oracle announced that it would expand its cloud services across the world. This includes the opening of 12 new data center regions and increase services available across Asia including China, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and South Korea; Europe including Amsterdam and Switzerland; and North America including two in Canada and two new US locations to support U.S. Department of Defense workloads.

Availability

New autonomous capabilities are expected to be available in the first half of 2018.
