PMC Introduces Smart HBA 1000 Series

Today PMC-Sierra announced its first smart family of solutions aimed at high-performance cloud and enterprise server storage connectivity, the HBA 1000 series of 12Gb/s SAS/SATA Host Bus Adapters. The new series is stated to deliver maximum resiliency and the industry’s lowest power using field-proven Smart intellectual property (IP) from the most widely deployed server storage stack and PMC’s SmartIOCTM controller. The HBA 1000 series comes in five models and provides a native server connectivity solution that can handle the most demanding workloads and configurations with up to 16 internal or external SAS/SATA ports in a low-profile MD2 form factor.

The HBA 1000 series MD2 form factor enables it to be installed in 2U servers enabling maximum native connectivity in the smallest footprint with no impediment to air flow. The new series is fully compatible with RAID adapters and expanders, meaning there are no proprietary adapters to buy in order to store, retrieve, and manage data across SSDs, HDDs, and tape drives. The HBA 1000 series can connect with up to 16 storage devices or more with an expander.

The HBA 1000 series utilizes PCIe Gen 3 to deliver its performance. Performance that PMC claims is 1.3 million IOPS (using SAS SSDs) with 60% less power than other HBAs. The lower energy usage means less heat, which means heat dissipation issues are less of a problem in dense server environments. PMC further claims that the new HBA 1000 series delivers 2.5 times greater sequential throughput with 85% higher random reads with SATA drives versus SATA drives with no HBA.

The HBA 1000 has broad operating system and leading Software Defined Storage (SDS) stack support, ecosystem compatibility and a unified set of tools and drivers with forward and backward compatibility with other PMC Adaptec solutions. Management and compatibility are further enhanced by supporting both 6Gb/s and 12Gb/s storage components.
