Proxmox Backup Server 2.4 is now generally available. This open-source software provides enterprises with a convenient way to back up and restore virtual machines, containers, and physical hosts.

Proxmox Backup Server is highlighted by its incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, authenticated encryption, and other useful functionality to ensure efficient and secure backup processes. The latest update brings a range of features, including a dark mode for the web interface, LDAP authentication realm and user synchronization, downloadable logs via the GUI, and more.

The previous update of Proxmox Backup Server (Version 2.3) featured enhancements to the web interface and tape new backup features, as well as a range of other general client and backend improvements. Version 2.4 introduces further enhancements, adding even more appeal for enterprise users.

Proxmox Backup Server Version 2.4 Features

One of the more notable features of 2.4 is the fully integrated “Proxmox Dark” theme, which gives users a sleek, modern look for the web interface. Users can customize the theme via a new Color Theme selector in the user menu, or let the browser or operating system decide the default color scheme using the “prefers-color-scheme media” query.

Also added is support for LDAP authentication realm and user synchronization. This new feature allows users to authenticate against an external LDAP server, and users in LDAP realms can be added manually or synced automatically from the LDAP server. Moreover, the web interface now includes a “realm field” in the Add User dialog, which makes adding users to an LDAP or OpenID Connect realm more seamless. This enhancement provides more flexibility and security for enterprise users who need to manage multiple users across different systems and platforms.

Proxmox Backup Server 2.4 also introduces initial support for WORM (write once, read many) tapes. With the use of special WORM cartridges, data can only be written to the memory once, preventing subsequent changes (and also protects against the accidental or intentional deletion of critical data). Proxmox notes that it makes no distinction between normal and WORM tapes, so they recommend users use different naming schemes and dedicated media pools to avoid confusion.

Technical documentation for Proxmox Backup Server has also been improved in 2.4, including more detailed explanations of Garbage Collection (GC). This will promote the efficient use of backup storage space. In addition, dark mode support has been added for the docs and the API viewer widget, which allows for a more consistent visual experience across the entire platform.

Proxmox Backup Server Version 2.4 is also now based on Debian 11.6 “Bullseye” (using the newer Linux kernel 5.15 or 6.2) as well as ZFS 2.1.9.
