Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 Released

Proxmox has released version 3.1 of its open-source server backup solution, Proxmox Backup Server. This release closely follows last week’s launch of Proxmox VE 8.1, the company’s virtualization management platform. The latest update to Backup Server enhances the capabilities of backing up and restoring virtual machines (VMs), containers, and physical hosts. Key features of this version include incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, and authenticated encryption.

Proxmox has released version 3.1 of its open-source server backup solution, Proxmox Backup Server. This release closely follows last week’s launch of Proxmox VE 8.1, the company’s virtualization management platform. The latest update to Backup Server enhances the capabilities of backing up and restoring virtual machines (VMs), containers, and physical hosts. Key features of this version include incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, and authenticated encryption.

The new Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 is based on Debian 12.2 “Bookworm” and operates on the Linux kernel 6.5 as its stable default. It incorporates ZFS 2.2.0 and includes fixes from the upcoming ZFS version 2.2.2, indicating a focus on robust and current data storage technologies.

Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 New Features

One of the more notable additions in version 3.1 is the support for Secure Boot. This security feature ensures that only software with a valid digital signature can launch during a computer’s boot process. Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 includes a signed shim bootloader, trusted by most hardware’s UEFI implementations. This update allows installation in environments with Secure Boot active and allows existing users to switch to Secure Boot without needing to reinstall the software.

Another feature in this release is the support for local sync jobs, which enables synchronization of backups between local datastores. This functionality extends beyond remote Proxmox Backup Server instances, allowing for local datastores synchronization.

Other enhancements include:

• Improvements in tape backup compatibility are also part of this update. The Proxmox Tape Backup system now has enhanced compatibility with LTO 9 tapes and certain tape libraries, broadening its utility in various backup scenarios.
• In addition, the user interface of version 3.1 now includes support for Croatian and Georgian languages, alongside improvements in other translations, which Proxmox indicates is due to the active contribution of its community.
• Seamless integration with Proxmox Virtual Environment is a continued feature, where users can easily add storage for the Proxmox Backup Server as a new storage backup target.

Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 Availability

Proxmox Backup Server 3.1 is available on the Proxmox downloads page. It can be installed on bare metal using an installation wizard available in the downloadable ISO image. For users of previous versions, distribution upgrades are possible via APT. Moreover, Proxmox Backup Server can be installed atop Debian.

The software is published under the open-source GNU AGPLv3 license.
