QNAP QTS 4.5.2 Released

Today QNAP Systems, Inc. released the latest version of its NAS operating system with QNAP QTS 4.5.2. The updates released today surround enhancements of SNMP for network device monitoring and support for Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) and Intel QuickAssist Technology (Intel QAT) passthrough to virtual machines (VMs). Also announced today was the company’s QXG-100G2SF-E810 dual-port 100GbE network expansion card.

QTS is QNAP’s core NAS OS software, though it does now have a second OS software with QuTS for its “hero” line of NAS devices that support ZFS. The main QTS has been out in the wild for some time now. QTS 4.0 came out all the way back in 2013. While there hasn’t been a big 5.0 release, the company has rolled out several smaller releases that keep folding in new technology as it comes out. We did a review of QTS 4.3.x a couple of years ago if you would like to get a more in-depth look at some of the OS’s main features. With the release of QNAP QTS 4.5.2, the OS focuses on a few key features.

Key new features in QTS 4.5.2

  • SR-IOV network virtualization: By installing an SR-IOV compatible PCIe SmartNIC in a NAS, bandwidth resources from a physical network card can be allocated directly to VMs. With traffic bypassing the Hypervisor vSwitch, it helps enhance I/O throughout and network efficiency by 20%, ensuring reliable VM applications and reduced CPU overheads.
  • Intel QAT hardware accelerator: Intel QAT provides hardware acceleration that offloads computationally intensive compression, improves IPSec/SSL cryptography performance, and supports SR-IOV for improved I/O throughput. All can be passed through to VMs on the NAS for optimized performance.

Of other interesting news, QNAP has released yet another expansion card. This one, the QXG-100G2SF-E810, is a dual-port 100GbE network expansion card. The card leverages the Intel Ethernet Controller E810 and supports PCIe Gen4. As the name implies, the card supports up to 100Gbps bandwidth. The card works with both Windows and Linux servers and workstations. This can eliminate bottlenecks and potentially lower operating costs.
