Retrospect Releases Backup 17 & Virtual 2020

Today, Retrospect released Retrospect Backup 17 and Retrospect Virtual 2020, as well as updates to its Retrospect Management Console. Retrospect is a surprisingly old company that’s had its share of name changes since it was founded as Dantz Development in 1984. Dantz Development was bought by EMC in 2004 only to be sold to Sonic Solutions 6 years later in 2010. 2010 was a turbulent year for the company, with Rovi acquiring Sonic Solutions, and thus Retrospect less than a year after being bought. A year later, in 2011, Rovi spun Retrospect back out as an independent company focused entirely on their eponymous backup software. Just last year, Retrospect was acquired again, this time by StorCentric, who owns them today. Retrospect’s products provide data and endpoint backups.

Retrospect Backup has been the core product of the company since the first version was released back in 1989, more than thirty years ago. As the name suggests, it has a laser-like focus on providing backup services across a wide range of environments. As part of that commitment, Backup includes a service Retrospective calls ProactiveAI. The service attempts to optimize the backup window for your entire environment. With the 17 Retrospective says that the backup process is ten times faster for customers with endpoints that are offline at various times. Handy, since most people turn their computers, and especially laptops off on no particular schedule. 17 further demonstrates Retrospective’s commitment to supporting a large number of environments by adding support and certification for Nexsan E-Series and Nexsan Unity storage devices. Backup 17 also adds support for exporting a preflight backup summary, including backup files and tape information.

Retrospect Virtual is targeted at VMware or Hyper-V virtual environments. Retrospect Virtual 2020 is, according to Retrospect, 50% faster at backup. Much like the non-virtual version, Virtual 2020 also adds support for new environments. 2020 updated Linux support with support for Ubuntu 19.04 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. The newest version of Retrospect Virtual also has support for Backblaze B2 and Wasabi Cloud as destinations.
