Available today, the new Samsung PRO Plus memory cards have been updated with increased read and write speeds. The latest additions to the company’s popular line are specifically designed for enthusiast photographers, videographers, and content creators.
They come in both microSD and full-size SD card form factors and will likely find themselves residing in mobile devices, handheld gaming consoles, action cameras, and drones. The new Samsung PRO Plus microSD cards are also available in capacities of up to 512GB; however, the full-size SD card format currently tops out at just 256GB.
The new memory cards come with application performance class A2 support, allowing for enhanced performance on a wide range of professional and consumer applications. Additionally, they are equipped with a video speed class rating of V30, making them ideal for the quick and efficient transfer of large video files during editing tasks.
As such, Samsung quotes read and write activity of up to 180MB/s and 130MB/s for all capacity points, which is a 12% and 8% increase, respectively, over their predecessors (i.e., 160MB/s read and 120MB/s). Achieving these optimal speeds greatly depends on having a reliable SD card reader, and fortunately, Samsung offers an optional bundle that includes a reader, ensuring the best possible performance (each microSD model comes with the usual microSD to SD card converter).
The SD card reader looks identical to the one bundled with the previous Samsung PRO Plus. It uses a USB type A connector, which could be either a pro or con depending on the type of system you have. Those using Mac (or a thin device) might need an adapter (for the adapter), or even a USB type C adapter that supports UHS-I DDR200.
Nonetheless, the new SD cards feature Samsung’s seven-proof protection (up from the previous version’s six-proof protection) and can withstand water, shock, extreme temperatures, x-ray, wear-out, drops, and magnetic impact.
