SanDisk Announces 2TB SATA SSD Optimized For Cloud Data Services

Today at Computex SanDisk Corporation announced a new, 2TB, purpose-built SSD for cloud service providers, the Cloudspeed Eco Gen. II SATA SSD. We reviewed the first Cloudspeed Eco and found that it performed well in our 8K and SQL server tests. The latest generation is based off of 15nm NAND flash and delivers greater density and 3 times the bandwidth of the HDDs it is designed as a drop-in replacement for. The new Cloudspeed Eco Gen. II SSDs will provide with a lower cost-per-square-foot for hyperscale applications such as analytics, media streaming, and content repositories.

Digital business is rapidly changing and in turn is driving changes in datacenters. Cloud service provides need to deliver on both capacity and performance. To compound this issue, the Internet of Things is also exploded, with Gartner forecasting that by 2020 over 25 billion “things” will be connected. This will put a further strain on datacenters as the data generated needs to be analyzed in real-time.

Cloud service providers have used HDDs for their low cost and high capacity, however the HDD-based storage is struggling to keep pace with the changing data. Cloud service providers see that in order to use HDDs to adapt to the changes they would have to significantly increase their IT footprint. With the price of flash dropping, along with its performance benefits versus spinning disks, higher capacity drives such as the Cloudspeed Eco Gen. II are becoming more appealing to service providers. As the price comes down and the capacities increase, flash will increase in adoption across the board in demanding cloud service environments.

As with the previous Cloudspeed SSDs, generation two also comes with SanDisk’s Guardian Technology platform. This proprietary platform includes several technologies, including FlashGuard, which is designed to get a lot more usable life from MLC flash compared to its standard specifications, EverGuard, which helps to ensure the prevention of data loss or corruption in the event of an unexpected power interruption, and DataGuard, which (as the name indicates) offers users with full data path protection for peace of mind that their data will be safe during the entire data path cycle as well as the ability to recover data from failed page and NAND blocks.

Availability

The SanDisk Cloudspeed Eco Gen. II SATA SSD comes with a 5-year limited warranty and will be available through SanDisk ODMs and select channel partners later this year. SanDisk will be giving live demos at their stand this year at Computex. From June 2-6 SanDisk will be at the Taipei World Trade Center NANGANG Exhibition Hall 4F, Stand number: N0804.
