Today Seagate announced it has been actively shipping 16TB helium-based enterprise drive as part of the Exos X16 family. The company also announced that the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro Network Attached Storage drive lines will be getting 16TB capacity models.

What is the Seagate Exos X16?

Exos X16 HDD is the world's highest capacity 3.5" 7200 RPM drive, and drives in the line are 2-4TB larger than the next largest Exos drives, the X12s. The new X16 line has ten models to choose from, evenly split between 16TB and 14TB models with both SATA and SAS versions for both capacities. Exos X16 offers built-in data protection, Seagate Secure Instant Secure Erase to facilitate drive retirement. With a MSRP of $629, they cost almost twice as much as the 12TB models which go for about $350.

Seagate IronWolf 16TB

Seagate also announced 16TB for the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro Network Attached Storage drive lines. The IronWolf lines are built for multi-user NAS environments and support workloads up to 300TB/year. IronWolf drives are targeted at home and small office NAS systems and offer low noise and low power consumption. IronWolf Pro drives are slightly more robust drives that can support heavier workloads and a 20% longer MTBF. Ironwolf Pro is targeted at small-medium business environments.
