Seagate Makes Several Storage Announcements At CES

Today Seagate Technology announced at CES 2019 in Las Vegas several new drive models, including new solid state drives. The new drives span everything from external drives like the LaCie in both HDD and SSD, to the BarraCuda 510 internal SSDs and even drives designed for Network Attached Storage (NAS) like the IronWolf 110.

The new drives span everything from external drives like the LaCie in both HDD and SSD, to the BarraCuda 510 internal SSDs and even drives designed for Network Attached Storage (NAS) like the IronWolf 110.

Seagate regards the LaCie line of external storage solutions as a premium product and wraps them in stylish diamond-cut coverings to appeal to creative professionals. The maximum storage offered by the product line is 5TB (HDD) or 2TB (SSD), more than enough for most use cases. Their fast transfer rates of about half a gigabyte can fill copy over the entire contents of the drive in about half an hour allowing users to swap data in and out rapidly. Further emphasizing Seagate’s targeting of the creative market with these drives, both the HDD and SSD models include a 1-month subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan.

Seagate is planning to release an M.2 form factor version of its BarraCuda drives sometime this spring. It is expected to use a PCIe Gen3 x4 (NVMe) interface and come in both 256GB & 512GB models suitable for both desktops and laptops. Seagate also announced a FireCuda 510 SSD targeted at high-end gamers. Like the BarraCuda drives, the FireCuda uses PCIe Gen3 x4 (NVMe) interface. The FireCuda offers larger capacities with models offering 1TB & 2TB.

Seagate’s IronWolf 110 SATA SSD (IronWolf 110 SSD review) is purpose-built for NAS. Seagate designed it with enterprise endurance and reliability needs in mind. Seagate claims their Durawrite technology extends the life of the drive up to 7000 TBW on the 3.84TB capacity model and plans for it to be available later this month. The line includes models ranging from 240GB to 3.84TB capacity. Like the LaCie line, the IronWolf 110 SSDs can support sequential reads/writes of about half a gig per second.
