StorCentric Releases Nexsan Unity Storage Appliances

StorCentric Nexsan released two new storage appliances, the StorCentric Unity 3300 and StorCentric Unity 7900 rack units. StorCentric was founded just two years ago in August 2018. In the less than two years it has existed, it has gobbled up four storage companies. The same month the company was founded, they announced that they would be acquiring storage companies Drobo and Nexsan. Soon afterwards, in June 2019, it bought Retrospect, a data backup vendor. Most recently, in July of last year, StorCentric purchased Vexeta.

Most recently, in July of last year, StorCentric purchased Vexeta.

StorCentric Nexsan’s Unity 3300 is the larger of the two new appliances with a 3U form factor. The machine comes with 256GB of RAM backed up by 1.6TB SSD Read/Write Cache. The customer can customize longer-term storage as either an all-flash storage system or a hybrid system. According to the company, extension bays can increase the form factor up to 11U, which provides a maximum of 1.68PB of storage on HDDs.

StorCentric Nexsan’s Unity 7900 is the smaller of the two new appliances with a 2U form factor. Despite its smaller size, it has more RAM than the 3300, weighing in at 448GB of RAM backed up by a 1.6TB SSD Read Cache and 16GB NVDIMM write cache per controller. The 7900 has two controllers. The customer can customize longer-term storage as either an all-flash storage system or a hybrid system. According to the company, extension bays can increase the form factor up to 34U, which provides a maximum of 6.72PB of storage on HDDs.

According to StorCentric, both models have an option to include a “cloud connector” that supports connections to 18 public clouds, including Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage, to allow for tiering. Both are also certified as a Veeam Ready Repository v10 and support a wide array of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, Mac, VMware ESX, Hyper-V, and Xen.

The Unity name comes from StorCentric’s unified architecture that allows a single platform to support both block (iSCSI, FC) and file (NFS, SMB) storage. Configuration is accomplished either through a built-in browser-based (HTML5) management console or a command line interface (CLI).
