SUSE made a few announcements recently including the general availability of SUSE Enterprise Storage 2, its collaboration with several partners to bring SUSE Enterprise Storage to 64-bit ARM powered devices, and that Lars Marowsky-Brée will serve as SUSE’s initial representative on the recently announced Ceph Advisory Board. SUSE Enterprise Storage 2 is the new version of SUSE’s self-managing, self-healing, distributed software-based storage solution that is the first and only Ceph-based solution with heterogeneous operating system support.

As more and more companies are moving to SDS to help control costs of storage, SUSE is bringing out the latest version of its SDS powered by Ceph, SUSE Enterprise Storage 2 enables companies to use off-the-shelf servers and disk drives to build highly scalable and resilient storage solutions. The new solution supports iSCSI in multipath configurations, enabling block storage across operating systems and environments including Linux, UNIX and Windows. The latest version also adds at-rest data encryption. SUSE has worked with Thomas-Krenn.AG to develop a series of turnkey software-defined storage appliances.

To bring further flexibility and hardware platform choice to customers, SUSE is working with several partners to bring SUSE Enterprise Storage to 64-bit ARM powered devices. These partners include Cavium, StackVelocity, and SoftIron.

And finally, SUSE announced that Lars Marowsky-Brée, a distinguished engineer, will serve as SUSE’s initial representative on the recently announced Ceph Advisory Board. The Ceph Community announced it will help drive the direction of open source SDS technology through the formation of an advisory board. Working closely with the community’s technical and user committees, the advisory board will attempt to expand and enhance community participation and collaboration for the Ceph project.

Availability

SUSE Enterprise Storage 2 is available now as an option with SUSE OpenStack Cloud or as a stand-alone storage solution.
