Synology Announces 8-Bay DS1813+ NAS

The new DS1813+ NAS is Synology’s latest eight-bay desktop DiskStation. In addition to its internal storage, the DS1813+ offers a maximum raw capacity of 72TB via expansion units, as well as providing four gigabit NICs which can be aggregated for maximum read speeds of 350 MB/s and write speeds of 200 MB/s. The DS1813+ supersedes Synology’s DS1812+, which we recommended in February as a robust 8-bay NAS likely to exceed performance and feature expectations for small and remote offices. Since then, the hardware platform underlying the DS1813+ has a number of enhancements more akin to the five-bay DS1513+ which was also recently announced.

The unit’s screwless internal bays support 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives, for up to 32TB of raw internal capacity. The DS1813+ can reach a total capacity up to 72TB by adding two DX513 expansion units, each which provides five more drive bays. The drives can be configured in Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) or standard RAID schemes.

The DS1813+ features four Gigabit NICs, up from two interfaces in the previous generation, which allow more flexible utilization of Synology High Availability, which offers failover to a mirrored DS1813+. The unit also offers iSCSI and VPN connectivity and two USB 3.0 ports which can be used to connect external drives to the DiskStation as backup storage, or be made network accessible as independent volumes. he DS1813+ runs the DiskStation Manager 4.2 (DSM 4.2) operating system, including Synology’s Cloud Station and WebDAV for synchronization and the integrated Refined Package Center.

Availability

Synology’s DiskStation DS1813+ is now shipping globally with an MSRP of $1099 without disks.
