Today Synology Inc. launched two new DiskStation NAS, the DS1517+ and the DS1817+, along with the new expansion unit, DX517. The new NAS devices are the long-awaited 5- and 8-bay models. Synology states that the new models will offer high-performance, reliability, and versatility for tech enthusiasts and small/medium-sized businesses. As with all Synology NAS devices, the new models are powered by the powerful and award-winning operating system DiskStation Manager (DSM), currently in its 6.1 version.
Both the DS1517+ and the DS1817+ come with a PCIe slot that allows users to install either an optional 10GbE network interface card or Synology’s new M2D17 M.2 SATA SSD adapter. This marks Synology’s first NAS that support M.2 technology. These M.2 SSDs can help users see a significant performance boost acting as a system cache, while leaving the main bays for more capacity. The additional 10GbE NIC allows users to boost maximum throughput. Synology is quoting speeds of 1,179 MB/s read and 542 MB/s write.
Both new NAS can be combined with up to two DX517. That means up to 10 more drives can be added for scaling. Users can also expand their RAID volume without reformatting the existing drives. Both of the devices come with either 2GB or 8GB of memory and can be expanded to 16GB. The new NAS are both powered by Intel Atom quad-core 2.4GHz processors.
