Today Synology Inc. announced the launch of two new DiskStations, the DS2015xs and the DS3615xs (initially a non-US launch). Both of the new DiskStations are expandable with the 12-bay DX1215 expansion unit that has a 6Gb/s connection allowing connected drives to operate as internal drives. The DS2015xs is aimed at small to medium businesses while the DS3615xs is aimed large-scale businesses.
Both new DiskStations are virtualization certified. Both units provide seamless storage for virtualization environments including VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V and are VMware vSphere 5 and VAAI integration certified. The units enable virtual migration from server to server while eliminating downtime and disruption. To improve efficiency on massive data transfer and migration, both units support Windows Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX) and Synology Advanced LUN. Both devices have native SATA III 6Gb/s support, which is the interface used to connect to the DX1215. And both are powered by Synology’s DSM.
The DS2015xs is for small to medium organizations that need a combination of cost-effectiveness with performance, the unit boasts performances of 2,095MB/s sequential read speed and a sequential read throughput of 59,185 IOPS under RAID5 configuration with VLAN. The DS2015xs features an Annapurna AL-514 Quad Core 1.7GHz, the AL-514 has parity offload to improve the performance of RAID5 and RAID6. The DS2015xs is the first Synology product to feature RAID5 and RAID6 storage acceleration.
The unit comes with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and is expandable up to 8GB. There are 8 bays with a raw capacity of 48TB (with a DX1215 unit the raw capacity can be expanded up to 120TB). The DS2015xs also comes with two built in SFP 10Gb/s LAN ports allowing for transfer speeds up to 100MB/s on each port, dramatically improving re-sync times. The DS2015xs comes with several feature-rich business applications such as printer sharing, VPN Server, Mail Server, web server, anti-virus, and a new version of Surveillance Station that supports up to 40 cameras. The device also has Synology High Availability that allows the creation of storage clusters, including Active-passive clustering allowing end-users to continue working in the event of a storage unit failure.
The DS3615xs is for large-scale organizations that need high performance, the unit boasts performances of 2,352 MB/s sequential read and sequential read throughput of 268,064 IOPS under RAID5 configuration with VLAN. The unit comes with 4GB of DDR3 ECC RAM but is expandable up to 32GB. There are 12 drive bays for up to 72TB of raw capacity (with two DX1215 units the raw capacity can be expanded up to 216TB). The DS3615xs features an Intel Core i3-4130 Dual Core 3.4GHz and comes equipped with comprehensive business applications.
The DX1215 adds an additional 12 bays to connected DiskStations. It has a 6Gb/s connection that allows connected drives to operate as internal drives in the connected DiskStations. The expansion unit can also serve as a local backup solution when created as a separate volume. The DX1215 acts as a backup solution in case of system failure.
