Synology has recently released its SAT5200 Series SATA SSDs. These NAS SSDs are designed to handle mixed and intensive 24/7 workloads without compromising on endurance, providing a streamlined storage experience on Synology systems with minimal service disruptions.

The SAT5200 SSD line are also purpose-built for demanding environments, like online transaction processing (OLTP) databases and virtualization deployments, while deliver consistently high performance. Additionally, they come with end-to-end data protection, which helps safeguard data integrity and consistency over the entire data transfer path.

Synology SAT5200

Synology quotes the SAT5200 with sustained sequential read and write speeds of 530MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively, across all capacities. The series is also expected to deliver sustained random read speeds of up to 98,000 IOPS (960GB and 1.92TB capacities) and sustained random write speeds of up to 67,000 IOPS (960GB capacity). The SAT5200 Series drives also come with enterprise-grade endurance and reliability, with endurance of up to 11,460 TBW, ensuring that the drives are built to withstand 24/7 workloads. Moreover, they have power consumption ranging from 1.3W at idle to 5.1W during active write, making them fairly energy-efficient.

The SAT5200 Series also has analytics capabilities via its integration with Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). Users can view lifetime analytics for each SAT5200 Series drive based on actual workloads, while providing timely notifications for uninterrupted system performance and longevity. Moreover, its easy monitoring features allow optimal use of each SSD, while automatic firmware update notifications and one-click installation help to minimize maintenance workload and reduce the chance of oversights.

The SAT5200 Series SSDs come in five different capacities, ranging from 480 GB to 7TB, and are compatible with Synology systems with 2.5″ drive bays. That said, these drives are formatted akin to that of light enterprise models, except for the 7TB capacity. Usually, one would expect either a 6.4TB or 7.68TB capacity. The reason for Synology’s deviation from the norm might be to provide extra over-provisioning for write operations without significantly reducing the storage capacity (as is the case with 6.4TB models).
