Toshiba Announces XG6-P SSD Series

Toshiba has announced the XG6-P SSD series, an offshoot of its performance-driven NVMe M.2 XG6 Series. The new Toshiba line are designed for high-end workstation PCs and gaming systems and cost-optimized data center and composable infrastructures. Available is capacities up to 2TB, Toshiba claims a significant improvement over other Toshiba drives, including double the capacity of the XG6, faster write speeds than the XG5-P, and a lower power envelope and smaller form factor than the datacenter class XD5.

The new Toshiba line are designed for high-end workstation PCs and gaming systems and cost-optimized data center and composable infrastructures. The XG6-P uses Toshiba Memory’s 96-layer BiCS FLASH 3D TLC and features a PCIe Gen 3 x4 lane (rev. 3.1a) interface. As far as the details of its performance go, it is expected to reach up to 3,180MB/s in sequential read and 2,920MB/s of sequential write with random speeds up to 355,000 IOPS and 365,000 IOPS for reads and writes, respectively. In addition, the XG6-P consumes less than 5 watts.

The XG6-P Series is also designed with a “future-ready” NVMe revision 1.3a protocol and provide users with new NVMe-based privacy and management features such as sanitize operations, telemetry data, and namespace management. Moreover, the new Toshiba drives feature enhanced security options including TCG Pyrite Version 1.0 support for NonSED (Self-Encrypting Drive) configurations, TCG Opal Version 2.01 support for SED, and support for Block SID Authentication and digital signature.

Availability

The XG6-P SSD is available in a single-sided M.2 2280 (22 x 80mm) form factor. Toshiba plans to begin sampling sometime in June.
