Toshiba has announced two new enterprise solid state drive series: the HK3E2, which focuses on value endurance workloads, and the HK3R2, which is designed for read intensive workloads. Both of the new Toshiba drive support 6Gb/s and add to the company’s portfolio of enterprise storage solutions, featuring a variety of endurance ratings to meet a variety of use cases.
Value Endurance HK3E2
The HK3E2 is available in capacities up to 800GB in a 2.5-inch standard form-factor (7mm Z-height). In addition, the new drive is designed for mainstream enterprise applications including exchange mail servers, web servers, database servers, indexing servers and data center storage workloads. The HK3E2 Series also features three drive writes per day (DWPD) endurance specification for five years with a random 4KiB enterprise workload.

Read Intensive HK3R2
The HK3R2 is available in capacities up to 960GB in also a 2.5-inch standard form factor (7mm Z-height). Toshiba’s new eSSD is designed for read intensive applications and workloads such as read caching, video streaming, and data center storage. The HK3R2 has an endurance rating of one DWPD for five years with a random 4KiB enterprise workload.
HK3R2 Specifications
Both eSSDs are come with power loss and end-to-end data protection features as well as a common controller and mechanical design. In addition, the HK3R2 and HK3E2 Series use Toshiba’s proprietary QSBC (Quadruple Swing-By Code) error-correction technology, which is their efficient error correction code (ECC) that helps to protect customer data from corruption caused by NAND flash memory media wear. As a result, it can improve reliability and extend the lifespan of Toshiba SSDs. Both new series also feature a Toshiba-designed SATA SSD controller and Toshiba 19nm second generation MLC NAND flash.
Availability
Customer samples of the HK3E2 and HK3R2 Series are now available.
Stay tuned for our upcoming review of the Toshiba HK3R2. We've had our hands on them for a few weeks now and we can honestly say they are the fastest SATA enterprise drives on the market. They've grabbed the highest scores in all of our application tests compared against other SATA SSDs!
